Hosepipe Bans in Effect: What It Means for Your Business
As warmer, drier weather puts pressure on the UK’s water supplies, Temporary Use Bans (TUBs) - commonly known as hosepipe bans -are being introduced by water wholesalers across certain regions.
These restrictions are designed to help preserve essential water supplies by temporarily limiting how water is used, especially for non-essential tasks.
Affected areas:
- Yorkshire Water: Restrictions began on Friday 11 July
- Thames Water: On Monday 14 July it was announced customers in Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire will face restrictions from Tuesday 22 July
- South East Water: Restrictions will take effect from Friday 18 July
- Southern Water: Restrictions will take effect from Monday 21 July for residents across much of Hampshire and all of the Isle of Wight
What Is a Temporary Use Ban (TUB)?
A TUB is a legal measure introduced during periods of drought or exceptionally high demand. While they’re primarily focused on domestic water use, some business activities may also be impacted, particularly when water is used for outdoor or cleaning purposes.
Why Are These Restrictions Being Introduced?
Hot weather, reduced rainfall, and increased demand for water can significantly reduce river and reservoir levels. To protect supplies for essential needs like drinking and sanitation, temporary restrictions are necessary.
While domestic customers are being asked to cut consumption, businesses - especially those with high water usage - are also being encouraged to reduce use wherever possible.
How Could This Affect Your Business?
Most restrictions apply to non-essential uses of water, such as:
- Watering lawns or plants using a hosepipe
- Cleaning external surfaces, vehicles, or windows
- Filling fountains, paddling pools, or swimming pools
Restrictions may vary by wholesaler, so it’s important to check the specific rules for your region.
If dry conditions continue, further restrictions may be introduced under a drought order – potentially impacting a wider range of business activities.
